Easy and Inexpensive Mother's Day Gifts from Young Children
Gifts from small children can be assembled at little to no cost using items found around the house or outdoors. Let children help as much as is safely possible. Very young children will of course need assistance.
Flower Bouquet. A grown-up or older sibling can help a small child collect flowers from the yard.
You'll need:
- Flower vase or a pretty plastic glass (Size depends on the bouquet)
- Wildflowers or garden flowers
- Ribbon (optional)
Directions:
- Pick wildflowers or garden flowers (get permission.)
- Trim stems to different lengths and cut off lower leaves.
- Arrange flowers in a vase or pretty glass and fill with water.
- Tie a ribbon around the vase and make a bow.
- Let the child present the gift to Mom on Mother's Day.
Mother's Day Card. Small children love to draw and color.
You'll need:
- White paper or construction paper (card stock paper will also do just fine)
- Pens, markers, stamp pads, crayons, or stickers (any combination)
Directions:
- Start with a piece of white or colored construction paper and fold in half or quarters.
- Older siblings or an adult can help with lettering or spelling.
- Allow the child to decorate the card in his own style using markers, crayons, pens, stamps, and/or stickers.
- Clean up any mess.
- Keep the card in a safe hiding place until Mother's Day.
Mother's Day Gift for Less than Ten Dollars
Mother's Day Rice Krispie Treats. These simple sweet treats are easy to make. An adult or older sibling will have to help with any cutting and the microwaving.
You'll need:
- Ready-made Rice Krispie Treats from the store (grocery cereal aisle, any size box)
- 1 6-pack package plain Hershey Bars
- Confetti decorations or pretty sprinkles (grocery cake mix aisle, cake decorations)
Directions:
- Remove Rice Krispie Treats from wrappers. Leave whole or cut in half. Place on microwave-safe plate.
- Remove Hershey Bars from wrappers. Break into single squares. Top Rice Krispie Treats with 2-4 squares, depending on the whole or cut size.
- Microwave on high for 10 seconds at a time until chocolate is soft but not completely melted. Remove from microwave.
- Allow the child to sprinkle confetti or decorative sprinkles onto the chocolate while it's very soft.
- Let cool completely. Store in an airtight container.
- Present treats to Mom on Mother's Day.
Notes: Make these Mother's Day treats no more than one day in advance to ensure freshness. Homemade Rice Krispie Treats can be substituted for the ready-made version.
